There is an exit from the supermarket that requires you, the shopper, to climb up eight steps. On the left side of the eighth step is a pair of metal poles that are concreted into place and a rectangular red painted metal notice with white lettering is affixed to them. It instructs as follows:
"Trolleys will stop at this point". 
Just in case you were wondering, any trolley of mine would not have made it up the steps!

I have been wondering if they have a few radio controllers about. I wonder if there's any concealed fixtures in the trolley wheels?

There ARE fixtures in the wheels to stop trolleys going past a certain point outside shops. Places like Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys use them xx

I heard that, but these steps are some distance from the store entrance. Who in their right minds would hike a partially full or full trolley up steps, especially trollies that aren't wheeled up for the art of step dancing.
The mind boggles.

I'm surprised trolleys with automatically adjusting legs and wheels haven't been invented yet for contending with steps.
But ridiculous signs do make for more interesting surroundings! I even have a book of them from around the world, one of which is "Please take advantage of the chambermaid". Hope no none took that literally!

I have yet to see a trolley scaling the steps, or even trying to. It wouldn't be in the store's interests to have jointed legs on the carts, they would lose too many of them.

one attempt years ago by our local supermarket to prevent trolley theft (not that high in our area anyway cos there aren't many streams in which to go trolley drowning) was some strange little metal studs that were supposed to lock the wheels as they rolled over out of the exit of the carpark - the wheels rolled over without even a hint of friction. the studs remain to this day and still serve no purpose whatsoever

I remember the 'stud' experiment, it happened in some places on this side of the water too. We do have 'trolley drowning' possibilities here (I like that expression) but considering the potential, there are not too many afflicted in that way, thank goodness. The £1 or €1 coin slot has been more effective in dealing with successful returns of trollies than any other method, I think.
It makes you wonder though, if the studs, the exhortations, media communication, the clipped use of language in I.T. and the upcoming olympiad have all effected the used of signage language. Some communications are becoming increasingly cryptic and enigmatic.
