BLESSED DOUBLE-DECKER LONDON BUS

by menhir @ 10 Mar. 2008 - 21:28:39

I discovered that a 27 bus that stopped on the opposite side of the road to where I was waiting, went very near to where I wanted to go in North West London. When there was a lull in the traffic on this busy arterial road, I rushed over the road to the bus stop for buses going along in the general direction of North and Easterly routes.

Once seated in the bus shelter, I got talking to a woman waiting with one little Scottie dog, (what a sweetie pet that was) and a doe-eyed Labrador. He just plopped his head in my lap and made himself comfortable while waiting for the bus.

Their red double-decker bus, a number 9, arrived, the woman and her pets got on. Whilst she was paying their fares, I saw out of the corner of my eye, creeping up  behind, the very bus I was waiting for, the number 27.  I jumped up; though it wasn't a request stop I waved my arms about.

As this other bus was at the stop, the 27 bus driver overtook it, completely ignoring me and I saw the bus I wanted disappear into the distance. The driver received my vast store of blessings!!

I was annoyed as these buses were not frequent, also time was getting on.

That is just horrible! Where I live until recently there were also request stops for - wait for it - trains (I kid you not.) This all ended when somebody stuck out his arm to stop the Treherbert to Barry Island Express (no, it isn't really an express, but it all helps the story along) and unfortunately broke his arm.... it's a mad world

It wasn't so long ago, or seems that way, Tylluan, that similar arrangements for stopping trains, pertained here. There are now unstaffed rail crossings, some of them downright unreliable and no personal stops. The buses that provide infrequent services in the rural North of Scotland, will stop for people at non-stops and likewise, let people off at convenient places. But of course, I was in busy central London, though not in the rush hour - it was a Sunday evening.

You have to remember that passengers bring unwelcome interruptions to the carefully planned route schedules !

Chris, I never thought of that - of course, silly me! I'll have to put a few pennies in the London Transport journey box to make sure the dear soul (the driver) still gets his wages.

Ooooh, Skip. I'll carry some with me next time I travel. No-one would get anwhere then, would they... but then I didn't get anywhere with that bus, anyway. :D

I've lost count of the number of times that's happened to me, and I don't live in Londinium.

Neither do I live in London, NB, I live in the North of Scotland.

It is so galling to see sneaky actions like that bus driver trundling off into the distance ignoring the reason for his existence.
