LOOPY

In case mother nature has forgotten, this is the 29th of May, nearly the beginning of June, when one usually expects to connect with the end of spring and the beginning of summer. Woolly jumpers disappear till the next wintry season and out come the lovely coloured, lightweight garments and cotton tops, cropped trousers, summery skirts and little jackets or pretty cardigans. The menfolk have their lighter weight dress code as well.

Here though - the north wind doth blow and we shall have snow....

It is unbelievable. We have northerly Arctic winds and when we go out we are muffled up to the gills. I cheer myself up with an orange padded jacket and a loopy, sienna brown, chenille scarf.

It's more like global cooling than warming at the moment. Mind you it won't surprise me to find we're having a heatwave in a few weeks time.
We got drought conditions here yet a friends lawn is waterlogged.
Talk about topsy turvy weather!

  It is difficult to comprehend the weather patterns, drought orders (let the powers that be try and impose one here, we could export wetness and the fluid stuff)cold temperatures etc. I guess what is cold for you, may be warm for us!

    I've been watching Springwatch this week and they keep saying how cold it is, both in Devon and the Shetlands. It really is a bit offputting for it to be like this at the end of May. I just wonder what the coming months will be like.

I was reading that global warming stopped back in 1987 or something. Or was it 1997? Whatever. We certainly aren't getting any, are we? My polytunnel is full of seedlings that I keep potting on, because if I put them out, they will be murdered by the hailstones.

  That wasn't publicized very widely was it. If it had been I guess the powers that be thought the majority of the population would have discarded all care for the planet -
  
  No, you're right, we aren't getting any warming. Three days last July of pleasant weather then 3 weeks warm-ish weather in October followed by a wet and milder than one would expect winter, till the end of January, that is. After which we got lots of snow and ongoing cold and wet weather. We've had 3 years of that pattern here where I live in the far north of Scotland.

  You must have a good strong polytunnel to survive the hailstones we get here.

    You heard that too? God, I would hate for Bus hto be right! Wouldn't *that* be a kick in the bum?
    
    We are north east (Banff way) and we are having much the same weather as yourself. I shall blog about it shortly.
    
    I used to live in central Scotland, so yes, we had better weather there. Amazingly since we are only 3 hours further north.
    
    My polytunnel is wonderful. I spend many happy hours up there just pottering. Small disaster yesterday which was disappointing though. My poor sweetcorn seedlings

      Sweetcorn - even under poly, aren't you trying your luck? Or is your tunnel heated in some way other than via the sun, when we get it?
      
      I love the peaches and cream variety of sweetcorns. I've had those in Canada and America, they are divine.

        Well, I wouldn't have tried but there is a woman in the village who grew some last year and said it done amazingly well. Right now, it is about an inch high, but I sowed it later because I wasn't going to bother. The other day I was at the local garden centre and theirs was about 8" high. I did think "Oh, good, they've got some, so mine should be okay" but they also had a wisteria in their greenhouse and when I spoke to the bloke about it (I wanted to know if you could grow wisteria on an arch) he told me to forget it because you can't grow that up here.

        ...sigh! So much gardening I loved down south is impossible here and I really do not enjoy the type of outdoor gardening of the north, so I don't do it.

        I agree. There really is a much bigger challenge up here than down south. My parents used to garden a lot, and had divided their garden into two sections - plants and vegetables.
        
        If you can find a sheltered area, and some really hardy plants, you can do things. My flower garden is in a really sheltered area, tucked right up behind the house, which is on a hill. That is also the children's enclosed play area. The veggie plot is just up from that.
        
        Unfortunatley the front is more of a challenge. It is 2 acres of grass, with no redeeming features. We are going to move the drive which will cut the grass in two, and take some of it away. We are then going to landscape it with *very* hardy evergreen foliage, replacing the gorse hedgeing with something else (I currently favour yew - but it takes an age to grow!) and we will create several levels instead of a long slope.

        I actually meant to say, before I rambled off on one - why not get yourself some sheltered areas - a polytunnel or two and greenhouses? You could do a Kew Gardens!

I might do better than the Glasgow horticultural gardens with some their specimens - on second thoughts, I'll keep it manageable with a few houseplants, some of which are about 30 years old and well travelled.
